Think Green While You Spring Clean

With the spring season just around the corner, there’s no better time to deep clean your house. Spring cleaning is an excellent opportunity to reset your home’s environment. It can also be the perfect motivator for checking off necessary maintenance chores from your to-do list. Here are several “green” ways to spring clean your HVAC system this season that will save you time and money.

Change air filters

Over time, particles can build up in your HVAC unit and become stuck to its filter. When air filters are not regularly changed, they become clogged by these particles. As a result, air cannot wholly flow through the filter, leading to various problems for your HVAC system. Most manufacturers recommend that air filters be changed every 30 to 60 days. Spring cleaning is an excellent opportunity to hold yourself accountable for changing your HVAC system’s air filter. You will enjoy better air quality within your home, and your HVAC system will run more efficiently.

Dust off surfaces

Dust, dirt, and allergens accumulate on surfaces, especially when you open your doors and windows to breathe in the lovely springtime air. Dust left lying around for too long can be swept into your indoor air. Be sure to spend time this season to dust off home surfaces, including lights and electronics, to keep your home and HVAC system allergen-free.

Adjust the thermostat

Spring is the time to transition to home cooling. Take the opportunity during your spring cleaning to adjust your thermostat to the proper temperature for the season. When you dial your thermostat up or down 7-10 degrees from its typical setting, you can save as much as 10% on your heating and cooling costs depending on the season.

Clean around the outdoor unit

Your HVAC unit has two main parts: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. Debris surrounding the outdoor A/C condenser unit can interfere with your system’s working features. During your spring cleaning, set aside time to remove any blockage such as dirt, grass, or leaves. For your safety, be sure to completely turn off the power to the HVAC system before you start cleaning.
